To welcome you into the family we provide an orientation retreat to share with you important ideas and information about the history and theology of the BIC. We hope that this retreat will provide you with a fuller understanding of the BIC that you are now part of.
What To Expect
Expect to participate in a spiritual retreat of renewal and encouragement. Come expecting to sing, worship and pray while also learning and growing in your knowledge of all things BIC.
What To Bring
Tables will be setup to allow you to use laptops and tablets during the sessions. Also, feel free to bring a notebook, Bible and pen as many of the sessions are noteworthy.
Due to COVID-19 social distancing regulations, we will be holding this year’s retreat at Westheights Community Church in Kitchener. Westheights has a large enough facility to allow for us to gather together while also maintaining the recommended 2m distance. If you are uncomfortable meeting together please let us know and we will provide accommodations for you. A map to Westheights church is here.
We will be staying at the Holiday Inn hotel in Kitchener. A map to the hotel is here.
Please arrive between 7 – 8:30pm for check-in and registration at the hotel. Sheryl Clark will greet you in the hotel lobby of the Holiday Inn and provide you with any last minute information that you will need for the retreat.
The retreat begins with a focus on our heritage and culture. The BIC has been been going and growing for the past 200 years. There are a few things you need to know about our history of transformation. Todd Lester will provide an overview of the BIC structure and staff. Charlie Mashinter will provide a timeline of the history of our denomination. Both presentations will be available here on the day of his presentation to download as you listen and take notes.
Darrell Winger, who has served in many different roles in the BIC, both in Canada and the USA, will join us and share about of the most important aspects of our unique history. Darrell will cover the topic of the BIC peace position. Darrell’s presentation will be available here on the day of his presentation to download as you listen and take notes.
In the morning, we will focus on our aspirational vision for pastoring in the BIC. Different BIC staff will share about what is the vision and leadership expectations for serving in the BIC.
In the afternoon, we will focus on our theological uniqueness. Bruxy Cavey will join us to talk about some of our unique anabaptist thinking around the life of following Jesus.
Our family day of the retreat will focus on our unique way of looking at theological and pastoral issues including interesting topics such as third way thinking and the Wesleyan quadrilateral.
We will finish our time with communion and worship as we depart for home after our lunch together.
